With a busy week and a change in our schedule, the students were happy for a little time in Developmental Centers at the end of a tiring week. We had a great time celebrating Columbus Day. Mrs. Lowe, our computer lab teacher, had already taught them many things about Christopher Columbus. We were able to make the 3 ships, the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Thank you to Logan, James, and Baptiste's parents for donating and helping out and to our room moms for coordinating the sign up. High Touch High Tech came to help us learn about Fabulous Forces yesterday. We learned... -A force can be a push or a pull. -Gravity is the force that pulls things down and helps things speed up (like cars and marbles). -Friction is the force that makes things stop and makes more work for you to push a cart. -Round things like to roll. We also worked in 5 different centers that showed 5 ways things can move. 1 - straight 2 - zig-zag 3- around and around 4- speed up, slow down 5- back and forth Please talk with your children about what they learned. Please consider signing up to help with our booth at the Fall Carnival. We are still in need of 5 volunteers to help. Our room moms sent out a link and it is also linked below. I would appreciate any help we can get.
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c044ba4ae28a5fd0-fall Here are some great fine motor exercises to help strengthen your child's hand. Please do a few of these at home. This will help with their strength and handwriting skills.
Spider Push-Ups: Show the students how to place both hands together with palms and fingers touching. Then, show them how to push the hands away from each other at the palm. The fingertips should remain in contact. Finger Pick-Ups: The students should stand at their desk and place their hands flat on the desk surface. They can then pick up each finger in isolation. Ask them to raise each finger from the desk surface 3 times and then pick up and hold each finger individually for several seconds. Fingertip Touch: Ask the students to touch their thumbs to the tips of each of the fingers. They can do both hands at the same time or one hand at a time. Then, ask them to touch the tip of their thumb to the base of each finger. They can touch the tip or base of each finger at different speeds, as they spell words, or count in various increments. Next, ask them to touch the tips or bases of each finger with their hands held behind their back or out of their field of vision. All these ideas and the video come from the link below. It has a LOT of information at the beginning and the list of these and other exercises are near the bottom. www.sugaraunts.com/2016/08/fine-motor-skills-needed-at-school-and.html Another great week of learning. We are getting SO much better at literacy centers and math centers. Your children are amazing! You received information from our Room Moms in the Thursday folders. Please send that back in and we will get it to our Room Moms so they can send you information about things happening around Timber Ridge.
Next week... Tuesday - Super Specials (computer and PE from 12:10-1:50) Wednesday - Library - everyone returned their books last week and Mrs. Provano was VERY impressed! I hope everyone has a relaxing LONG Weekend! See everyone Tuesday :) We have had a great week and learned SO much! We learned how to use our book boxes and Read to Self. The students really WOWED me at focusing on their own books and they ALL earned a Read to Self Raffle ticket. I usually only give out one or two but they did SO GOOD - I broke my own rules :) We also learned the procedures for our new math centers. We learned how to get on our ipads and abcmouse.com. We practiced making pictures with shapes and learned a game called shake and spill to learn about different ways to show a number (5 can be 2 and 3 or 1 and 4 or 0 and 5, etc.) We are still learning and reinforcing routines as we introduce new things to the students. We also had a firefighter visit us today to teach us all about fire safety. Please talk with your child and ask them to discuss all the things they learned today. Don't forget to check out the Photo Gallery for pictures of how we celebrated the 20th day of school today!
I sent home a paper today for students to complete this week. Please help them practice their address. Kindergarten students need to know their address and their city/town in the first nine weeks. This is a very difficult skill and we will need your help. When they can tell me their full address, they will get a special prize! Thanks for all your support.
What a great week it has been. We were so busy this week. We had our first shared reading story, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Throughout the week, we learned how good readers, predict, retell, make connections, discuss the problem and solution of the story and tell their opinion (their favorite part). Please discuss the work you see coming home with these shared reading activities.
In math, we started our first math journal where we searched for color and number words to help us understand the problem and then colored to figure out the answer. We have 10 problems in our journal so you will see these coming home next Friday. Be sure to have your child tell you how we work to solve the problem. We also practiced our counting skills and quick number identification by playing a game called skillboards with partners. Each partner had to find a representation of the number that Mrs. Thurman called (the numeral 2 and 2 dots) We talked about emotions and gave examples of when we felt those emotions. We also discussed that it is okay to feel all the emotions and that at some point you will. The important thing we talked about was what your body did when you had those feelings (It's okay to be mad but not to hit someone if you are mad) Next week, we will start learning our math center rotation and continue to reinforce our learning routines. We will visit the Learning Commons for the first time on Tuesday at 8:15am. Have a great weekend! |
